Dental treatment in Turkey for UK patients

How long is the flight from the UK to Antalya?

Direct flights from London to Antalya Airport (AYT) usually take about four to four and a half hours, and routes from several regional UK airports take a similar time. Many direct routes are seasonal: there is plenty of choice from spring to autumn, while in winter you may need to connect, often via Istanbul.

Turkey stays on GMT+3 all year, so it is two hours ahead of the UK in summer and three hours ahead in winter. The airport is close to the city, so the transfer to your hotel and the clinic is normally short.

What should you plan before you travel?

• Speak to your UK dentist or GP first. The NHS, the GDC and the FCDO all recommend discussing treatment abroad with your own clinician before you commit.
• Get a recent x-ray. A panoramic x-ray (OPG) from your UK dentist lets a dentist plan properly. You can ask your practice for a copy of your records.
• Prepare your medical history: conditions, medicines (especially blood thinners), allergies, smoking and previous surgery.
• Ask who will treat you, what qualifications they hold and which body they are registered with.
• Get a written, itemised treatment plan, the consent information and the warranty terms before you book flights.
• Plan the trip length with a buffer. Implants usually need two trips a few months apart; crowns and veneers usually need one longer stay. The plan may change after the in-clinic scan, so flexible tickets help.
• Arrange travel insurance, tell the insurer about the treatment, and check the latest GOV.UK entry requirements for Turkey.

   An in-person examination and, where needed, a 3D (CBCT) scan confirm the plan. Any change is explained and agreed with you before treatment starts.

Does GHIC or EHIC cover dental treatment in Turkey?

No. The NHS states that a GHIC or EHIC does not cover going abroad for planned medical treatment; it is for necessary state healthcare during visits to the EU and Switzerland. It does not cover private treatment either.

Turkey is not in the EU, and it is not listed among the UK's reciprocal healthcare agreements with non-EU countries on GOV.UK. The NHS S2 and EU directive funding routes apply only to Europe, and the NHS treatment abroad checklist states that you cannot get reimbursement for dental treatment. Private dental treatment in Turkey is therefore self-funded.

What should you check with travel insurance?

• According to the NHS, most travel insurance policies will not cover planned treatment abroad, so you may need specialist cover.
• Tell your insurer about your plans before you travel, as the NHS checklist recommends.
• Check what is covered: unrelated illness or accidents, cancellation, delays and medical repatriation.
• Ask whether complications of elective treatment are excluded and what that would mean for you.
• Ask the clinic whether it holds insurance for the procedure; the GDC suggests asking this question.

What do the NHS, GDC and FCDO advise about treatment abroad?

• NHS: base your decision on the quality of care, not the destination. Be wary of a hard sell, a lack of information, pressure to decide quickly, no discussion of complications and no mention of aftercare.
• NHS: stay in the country long enough to recover before travelling home. The NHS is not liable for negligence or failure of treatment abroad.
• GDC: it cannot guarantee that other countries have an equivalent regulator or the same standards, so check who regulates the dentist and ask plenty of questions.
• FCDO: discuss plans with your UK doctor or dentist first. Its Turkey health page reports deaths and complications among British nationals after medical procedures and points to the Turkish Ministry of Health list of approved providers.
• BDA: UK dentists report seeing patients with problems after treatment overseas, and continuity of care is a key concern.

How does aftercare work once you are back in the UK?

Before you fly home, the clinic checks the result and gives written aftercare instructions. Back in the UK, remote reviews by WhatsApp continue with the treating dentist, and your local dentist looks after routine check-ups and hygiene. Any care you receive in the UK is provided under normal NHS or private dental arrangements and charges.

• A copy of the final treatment plan and clinical notes
• Digital copies of all x-rays and 3D scans
• Implant details: manufacturer, system, size and batch number (often called an implant passport)
• Crown and veneer materials, shade and the dental laboratory used
• Any prescriptions and the aftercare instructions
• The treating dentist's name and registration details
• The warranty terms, in writing, and who to contact for follow-up

Share these records with your UK dentist. They make it much easier for any dentist to maintain or repair the work later.
