An extraction is recommended when a tooth is too damaged, infected or loose to be restored predictably, or when a wisdom tooth causes repeated infection, decay or damage to its neighbour. A simple extraction removes a visible tooth with instruments; a surgical extraction may involve a small cut in the gum, removing a little bone or dividing the tooth into sections — common with impacted wisdom teeth. Before any removal the dentist should check whether the tooth can be saved, for example with root canal treatment, and plan how the gap will be managed: an implant, bridge, denture, or sometimes nothing at all. Assessment
An x-ray, and for some wisdom teeth a 3D scan, shows the roots and nearby nerve and sinus. The dentist confirms the tooth cannot reasonably be saved and whether a simple or surgical extraction is needed.

Anaesthetic
The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain. Sedation can be discussed for anxious patients or surgical cases.

The tooth is loosened and removed. Surgical cases may need a small cut in the gum, removal of a little bone or dividing the tooth, followed by stitches.

Aftercare
Bleeding is controlled with gauze, and you receive written instructions on eating, cleaning, painkillers and warning signs. Replacement options are discussed where relevant.
How long you stay
For a simple extraction, plan at least two to three days in Antalya so the dentist can check the socket before you fly. After a surgical or wisdom-tooth extraction, allow around 3–5 days. If an implant is planned, it is usually placed on a later trip once the site has healed, although immediate placement is sometimes possible.

Recovery
Some oozing for the first few hours and swelling and soreness for two to three days are normal, and longer after surgical removal. For the first 24 hours avoid rinsing, spitting, hot drinks, smoking, alcohol and strenuous exercise, and eat soft food on the other side. Gentle warm salt-water rinses usually start the next day.

Risks and how they are managed
- Pain, swelling and bruising — usually peaking around day two or three and managed with simple painkillers and cold compresses.
- Bleeding — controlled by biting on gauze; the dentist must know about blood-thinning medicines beforehand.
- Dry socket, where the blood clot is lost and the socket becomes very painful a few days later — more common in smokers and after lower wisdom teeth; treated with a soothing dressing.
- Infection — reduced by keeping the area clean; antibiotics are used where the dentist judges them necessary.
- Numbness or tingling of the lip, chin or tongue after lower wisdom-tooth removal — usually temporary and rarely permanent; the risk is assessed from the x-ray or 3D scan beforehand.
- An opening into the sinus after removal of an upper back tooth — uncommon; it often heals on its own or is closed by the dentist.
- Bone shrinking at the site over time — relevant if you later want an implant; socket grafting can sometimes help.

I take blood thinners — can I have a tooth out?
Tell the dentist about every medicine before treatment. Many people on blood thinners can have extractions safely with local measures to control bleeding, but never stop or change a blood-thinning medicine without advice from the doctor who prescribed it.
What can I eat afterwards?
Stick to soft, lukewarm food for the first day or two and chew on the other side. Avoid hot drinks while you are numb, alcohol for at least 24 hours, and hard or crunchy food near the socket until it has healed.
When can I fly after an extraction?
Many dentists advise waiting at least 24 hours after a simple extraction and a few days after surgical removal, so bleeding has settled and the socket has been checked. Your dentist confirms when it is safe to fly.
What if there is a problem after I return home?
Some soreness and oozing is normal for a few days. If bleeding will not stop with firm pressure, pain gets worse after day three, or you develop swelling, fever or difficulty swallowing, seek local urgent dental or medical care and contact the team on WhatsApp.
