A zirconium (zirconia) crown is a metal-free cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth to restore its strength, shape and colour. Zirconia is a very strong ceramic, so it is widely used for back teeth, bridges and patients who grind; layered or high-translucency zirconia is used where appearance matters most. Because a crown requires more tooth to be removed than a veneer or filling, it should be used when the tooth genuinely needs full coverage — for example after root canal treatment, a large fracture or extensive decay — rather than simply to change colour. Assessment

Are zirconium crowns strong?
Yes. Zirconia is one of the strongest ceramic materials used in dentistry and is suitable for back teeth. Grinders should still wear a night guard to protect crowns and natural teeth.
Will there be a black line at the gum?
Zirconia contains no metal, so there is no grey metal edge. However, gums can recede over time and expose the natural root, so good gum health still matters.
How long do they last?
Studies commonly report good survival of zirconia crowns over five to ten years, but there is no fixed lifespan. Decay at the edges, grinding and gum health are the main factors.
Do they stain?
The zirconia surface is highly stain-resistant, but your natural teeth and the crown edges can still pick up stains, so regular cleaning is important.
Does it hurt?
Preparation is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel vibration and pressure rather than pain. Mild sensitivity for a few days afterwards is common.
Can I fly straight after having crowns fitted?
Yes. Crowns do not prevent flying. Just make sure your bite has been checked and feels comfortable before you leave.
What if a crown becomes loose after I return home?
