After a tooth is lost, the jawbone around it gradually shrinks, and bone can also be lost through gum disease or infection. If there is not enough bone to hold an implant securely, it can often be rebuilt. A bone graft adds graft material — your own bone, processed donor or animal bone, or a synthetic substitute — usually covered by a collagen membrane, and the body gradually replaces it with its own bone. A sinus lift is a specific graft for the upper back jaw: the thin lining of the sinus floor is gently raised and graft material placed beneath it. In some cases the implant is placed at the same appointment; in others the graft needs several months to heal first. Grafting is not always necessary — shorter or angled implants, or a bridge or denture, may be alternatives. 3D assessment
A 3D (CBCT) scan measures bone height and width and shows the sinus and nerve positions. The dentist explains whether grafting is needed, which type, and whether the implant can be placed at the same time.

Graft or sinus lift
Under local anaesthetic, with sedation available, graft material is placed and usually covered with a membrane. For a sinus lift, the sinus lining is gently raised through the implant site or a small window in the side of the jaw.

Healing
The graft is gradually replaced by new bone over roughly four to nine months, depending on its size and type. Check-ups and a follow-up scan confirm healing.

What exactly is a sinus lift?
The maxillary sinuses are air spaces above the upper back teeth. After tooth loss the bone beneath them can become too thin for an implant. A sinus lift raises the sinus lining and places graft material underneath to create more bone height.
Can the implant be placed at the same time?
Sometimes. If there is enough bone to hold the implant firmly, a small graft or sinus lift can be done at the same appointment. With very little bone, the graft is done first and implants are placed after healing.
How long does the bone take to heal?
Commonly four to nine months before implants can be placed or crowns fitted, depending on the size, type and location of the graft. Small grafts placed with the implant may add little extra time.
Can I fly after a sinus lift?
Pressure changes can strain a healing sinus, so dentists usually advise waiting longer before flying after a sinus lift than after a simple implant — often around a week or more. Your dentist confirms when it is safe to fly before you book your return.
What happens if there is a problem after I return home?
Contact the team on WhatsApp with photos; the treating clinic reviews them and advises. Seek local urgent care for heavy bleeding, increasing swelling, fever or persistent sinus symptoms. Ask before treatment who covers remedial work and travel.
