Bruxism — grinding or clenching the teeth — is common, often happens during sleep, and has been linked to stress, sleep problems, some medicines, alcohol, caffeine and smoking. It can wear and crack teeth, break fillings and restorations, and contribute to jaw-muscle ache and headaches. A custom night guard (occlusal splint) is made from a scan or impression of your teeth so it fits closely; a hard acrylic guard is usually preferred for heavy grinders. It protects teeth and restorations but does not stop the underlying habit. For some people with painful, overactive jaw muscles, masseter (jaw-muscle) treatment may be discussed as a separate medical procedure, only after a proper assessment. A night guard is usually made within a few days, so it fits into a short trip or can be added to crown, veneer or implant treatment — often at the end of a smile makeover, once the final restorations are fitted. Allow time for a fitting appointment before you fly.

Usually two short appointments a day or more apart: one for the scan or impression and one for fitting.

There is no recovery time. The guard can feel bulky and you may notice extra saliva for the first few nights; most people adapt within one to two weeks. Mild tooth tenderness or a slightly different bite on waking usually settles quickly — tell the dentist if it persists.

How does a night guard help?

What is masseter treatment?
It aims to relax an overactive masseter (jaw) muscle. It is a separate medical procedure with temporary effects and limited evidence for grinding, offered only after assessment by a suitably qualified clinician. It does not replace a guard for protecting your teeth.
Will it protect my veneers?
A night guard helps protect crowns, veneers and implant restorations from grinding forces, which is why it is often recommended after a smile makeover. It reduces, but cannot remove, the risk of chipping.
Is a custom guard better than a shop-bought one?
Shop-bought “boil and bite” guards are bulkier and less precise, and soft guards can encourage some people to chew on them. A custom guard fits closely and can be adjusted to your bite.
Upper or lower teeth?
Either can work. Many dentists make hard guards for the upper teeth, but the choice depends on your bite, any missing teeth and comfort.
How do I clean it?
Brush it gently with cool water and a soft brush (some toothpastes scratch the surface), rinse, let it dry and store it in its ventilated case. Avoid hot water, which can distort it.
How long does a night guard last?
Commonly several years, depending on how hard you grind and how well it is cared for. Bring it to check-ups so wear and fit can be checked.
Will it stop my headaches or jaw pain?
It helps some people, especially when pain comes from overworked jaw muscles, but it is not a cure. Persistent jaw pain, locking or limited opening should be assessed, as other causes may need different treatment.
